In Honor of Dr Martin Luther King Jr

MLK400x831January 19, 2013 — In conjunction with Xi Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation of Manasota Inc. (Alpha Foundation) held an exhilarating event filled with music and dance as well as thoughtful reflections and renewed commitments to benefit its scholarship and mentoring programs. Over 240 people made their way to the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club to an excellent sit down – butler style – dinner and live musical entertainment. The Bus Stop Band of St. Petersburg dazzled the audience with its upbeat tempo and showmanship. The attendees danced early and stayed late; moving their hips to the sound of R&B, Hip-Hop and Jazz before dinner, before and after the speaker on into the night. “It was one of most crowded dance floors we have ever had”, stated Xi Psi Lambda President Michael K. Suarez. He also said “The MLK Dinner Dance has become one of best events in Sarasota. It seems to get better every year”.

The “Wobble”, “The Cupid Shuffle”, “Cha-Cha Slide” and other newer line dances were the rage of an energy filled night. In fact, the dance floor was filled with attendees all night dancing to music ranging from Michael Jackson, Usher, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Prince to Heat Wave, O-Jays, Earth, Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Ohio Players, Rick James and the Temptations plus many of everyone’s old time favorites.

This year’s guest speaker was Alpha Brother Darryl R. Matthews, Sr., currently the Executive Director of the National Medical Association (NMA). He also served as the 32nd General (National and International) President for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Brother Matthews spoke directly to the Alpha Men in attendance exhorting them to seek out ways to better our communities’ outreach through civic action and community development. He touched on the legacy of Alpha greatness. “For is this not the mission of service – the mission of Alpha men?” The spirit of Brother Martin Luther King Jr. was present, as attendees enjoyed the unique format of this event.

Alpha Brothers Herman “Bo” Bell and Lacy Ray were recognized for hosting the largest number guests for the event. However, judging from the crowd’s response it appears every Alpha brother was able to “hold his own”, entertaining the couples and engaging the singles at their tables. The funds raised will be used to supplement the foundation’s college tour, mentoring programs and college scholarships. The Alpha Foundation has supported the lives of middle and high school African-American and Hispanic males in Sarasota and Manatee Counties since its inception in 2001, according to Brother Bell, Alpha Foundation President and MLK event chairman.

The artwork for the cover of this year’s journal featured a stunning portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. carrying an arm full of textbooks while being draped by an American flag. Special thanks to internationally acclaimed artist Gail Fulton Ross for providing the artwork. — Charles Stephens
